If you have one sister or more, you might enjoy reading Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors.
This book is a close-up look at the human condition under the circumstances of grief, loss, sisterhood, and family complications.
Some people might find this book off-putting because they don’t like any of the characters, but I think that might be the point.
We’re not supposed to like Avery, Bonnie, Nicky, or Lucky – instead we can understand them, empathize with them, and learn from their mistakes.
Honestly, this might be a biased review because I grew up in a household as a middle child with two sisters.
With the point of view in this book jumping from one sister to another, we get a microscopic view of their everyday lives – how they think, how they survive, and how they deal with their mistakes.
The flashbacks from this book absolutely broke my heart. It shines a light on the rollercoaster feelings of sisterly bonding, showing how different it is from friendship or romantic love.
Overall, I think the sisters did the best they could with how they grew up. By the end of the book, I found myself rooting for each sister one by one.
I kept hoping for each of them to pick up the pieces and start living instead of surviving.
Eventually, I found myself cheering for them the way I would for a friend, or a sister.
